Teleost (bony) fishes are found in all types of aquatic environment and are extremely diverse behaviorally. Their evolutionary success is partly due to their striking behavioral plasticity; as such they are also extremely useful organisms for the study of mechanistic and functional models of behavior. Considerable progress has been made over the past decade in understanding how behavior, ecology, and genetics interact to determine individual survival and reproductive success in fishes, and thus the evolution of their behavior. Behavioural Ecology of Teleost Fishes reviews the latest advances in behavioral adaptations for survival and reproduction in fishes, and proposes new directions and approaches for future research. The book focuses on habitat selection and space use, foraging, predator avoidance and evasion, and reproduction. It also considers how the behaviour of individuals affects ecological processes at population and community levels.

The book benefits students, teachers, and researchers interested in the behavior and ecology of fishes, as well as those with a general interest in behavioral ecology. It is also a valuable reference source for biologists, aquaculturists, and conservationists.

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) November 10, 2011

A five-year program to reduce the impacts of a changing climate and threats to biodiversity and local people in Nepal, called Hariyo Ban, was launched this week in Kathmandu. The program, funded by USAID, is being led by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in partnership with a consortium of leading conservation organizations in Nepal – CARE, the Federation of Community Forestry Users in Nepal (FECOFUN) and the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC).

Climate change poses a major threat to the people and biodiversity of Nepal. More than 10 million people are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change in Nepal. Glacier retreat in the Himalayas has increased the risk of glacier lake outburst floods, which could have devastating consequences for downstream communities, infrastructure, property and wild animals. Increasingly intense and frequent forest fires, floods and landslides also threaten biodiversity and livelihoods in the region.

Hariyo Ban, which means “green forests” in Nepali, will help build resilience to climate change in communities and ecosystems by restoring and protecting Nepal’s forests. It will also improve the livelihoods of some of Nepal’s most impoverished communities.

“Recognizing the inseparable link between climate change and development, USAID is proud to lead President Obama’s vision for global development that includes the Global Climate Change Initiative,” said Ms. Patricia Mahoney, Chargé d’affaires, US Embassy. “This initiative promotes strategic efforts to build lasting resilience against climate impacts, reduce deforestation and land degradation, foster low-carbon growth, and promote sustainable societies, thus, meeting the adaptation and mitigation needs of developing countries like Nepal.”

Hariyo Ban aims to reduce over 1 million metric tons of CO2 emissions in the target landscapes. It will also help improve the livelihoods of 180,000 people; improve the management of 124,000 acres of forest; and generate revenue from Payments for Environmental Services.

“This ambitious project recognizes that forests are the true wealth of Nepal, as forests not only support the livelihoods of millions of people and provide a safe haven for endangered species but also are vital to combat the impacts of climate change,” said Judy Oglethorpe, the Chief of Party for Hariyo Ban. “For WWF, this project also marks a return to the world famous Annapurna Conservation Area, which was created through the pioneering efforts of the late Mingma Sherpa and Dr. Chandra Gurung, both of WWF.”

Hariyo Ban will build on the successes of past conservation initiatives in the Terai Arc Landscape in southern Nepal, which is the biggest and most ambitious landscape level conservation site in Nepal, and the new Chitwan-Annapurna Linkage, which links the high Himalayas to the Terai.

“Nepal is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world and the Government of Nepal welcomes the efforts being made by Hariyo Ban,” said Mr. Deependra Bahadur Kshetry, Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission. “The year 2011 is being celebrated as the International Year of Forests and the theme ‘Forests for People’ also complements the goals of Hariyo Ban, which is expected to bring positive results to the people and environment of Nepal.”

Notes to the Editor:

Photos for use with this story are available here.

Climate change in Nepal

The increasingly unpredictable weather patterns include warmer and drier winters, drought, changes in the monsoon rain patterns, and more intense precipitation events. In the mountains the warmer, drier winters with limited snowfall and rain in the last few years have affected winter crops and contributed to food shortages. In the low-lying Terai more intense flash floods and cold spells are destroying crops, and severe flooding has resulted in temporary displacement of people.

The changes in temperature and rainfall are creating favorable environments for pests, diseases and invasive species to emerge, spread and encroach in agricultural and forest lands and cause loss of biodiversity. Water resources are affected, with direct impacts on wetlands, the availability and quality of fresh water, water recharge systems for irrigation and hydropower, as well as the risk of increased floods, droughts and landslides. The most sensitive sectors are agriculture, forestry, water and energy, health, urban and infrastructure, tourism, industry, and overall livelihoods and economy.

Coined in the 1970s, the term sustainable development and the ideas behind it have enjoyed varying amounts of popularity over the years. And while dire predictions abound, the full impacts of global warming are not known, nor can they be known. What we do know is that to be sustainable, all societies must adjust to new realities, which include changing ecosystems and natural limits to growth. How do we address these issues and maintain an equitable way of life for all on the planet?

Exploring the human-related aspects of sustainable development, Sustainable Development: Principles, Frameworks, and Case Studies emphasizes the need to move away from an unwanted circumstance by being systemic in our thinking instead of symptomatic. The authors argue that we cannot move away from an unwanted, negative circumstance, unless we can move toward a desired, positive outcome. The text summarizes positive approaches and presents strong theoretical and historical concepts along with salient case examples that illustrate the desired outcome of each model or framework discussed.

Often ensnared in thorny political ideology, the sustainable development issue also suffers from a deep and multidimensional nature that can be intimidating. This book offers, in one volume, a broad discussion of important frameworks pertaining to sustainable development. Based on the expertise of distinguished practitioners and scholars, the book’s content includes diverse and interrelated subjects drawn from a wide range of geographical areas. It offers techniques for evaluating and applying the basic principles of sustainable development and participatory project planning to achieve economic and environmental goals.

Hyatt Regency New Orleans

MORRISTOWN, NJ (PRWEB) January 26, 2012

After being shuttered for more than six years, following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Hyatt Regency New Orleans recently reopened following a $ 275 million redesign and revitalization.

The 1,193-room hotel offers the city’s largest hotel event space, doubled to 200,000 square feet and features Schindler Elevator Corporation’s award-winning PORT (Personal Occupant Requirement Terminal) Technology to help move the thousands of guests who pass through the building’s 32 floors every day faster and more efficiently.

Schindler recently completed the installation of its PORT destination-dispatch system on eight high-rise passenger elevators at Hyatt Regency New Orleans. Unique to the hotel is that each guest’s room key is programmed automatically upon check-in to provide customized elevator access. When guests swipe their room key at the PORT device, an elevator is automatically called to take them to the hotel floor where they will be staying. Due to the PORT system’s advanced access control, guests receive customized mobility throughout the hotel from the moment they first reach the elevator bank. It is the first building in Louisiana to benefit from the power of Schindler’s PORT Technology and the first hotel in the United States with a building security system seamlessly integrated with elevator access control at every floor.

Best understood as the central nervous system of a building, PORT Technology functions as a two-way communication interface between the occupants and the hotel’s environment. The system’s visible aspect is a sleek, futuristic interface positioned at access points and elevators around the building. Behind the stylish touch screen is a powerful software system, capable not only of calculating the optimum route to any destination within the building, but also of “learning” how its occupants typically move around. With this information, PORT Technology primes the elevators to direct and transport people quickly and safely to their individual destinations. Furthermore, Schindler’s patented technology works with RFID badges to identify passengers and call elevators for personal service.

“The PORT Technology makes possible a truly networked environment at Hyatt Regency New Orleans that recognizes occupants and responds to their individual needs,” says Michael Landis, vice president, Marketing for Schindler. “What makes the system special is the ease with which the hotel’s managers can design applications to accommodate a wide range of needs in real time. Whether it’s helping to meet new energy-efficiency goals, updating security, scheduling maintenance or adapting to people with special needs, unprecedented levels of customization can be achieved.”

“The revitalized Hyatt Regency New Orleans offers guests the latest in technology and the new PORT Technology represents the advances that we have made to provide our guests with an optimal experience.” noted Michael Smith, general manager, Hyatt Regency New Orleans. “This system is innovative and efficient which are both key in providing great customer service.”

PORT Technology Energy-Saving Features

o Each PORT terminal’s proximity sensor tells it when to be active and at all other times puts it into low energy consumption mode.

o When the terminal screen illuminates, an ambient light sensor determines only the brightness level required, again optimizing energy usage.

o The PORT Technology helps ensure elevator trips are as efficient as possible. This produces a very resourceful use of energy even during heavy traffic.

About Hyatt Regency New Orleans

HNTB Corporation works closely with New York State Department of Transportation to incorporate environmental sustainability in landmark project.

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 26, 2012

In commemoration of Earth Day 2012, New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald presented an “evergreen” award to the Lake Champlain Bridge project in the state’s first-in-the-nation Green Leadership in Transportation and Environmental Sustainability (GreenLITES) program.

The Lake Champlain Bridge is located in Crown Point, NY and is a primary connection between New York and Vermont. The bridge closed unexpectedly in 2009 due to the discovery of severe deterioration and then subsequently demolished. A new replacement bridge (2,200 feet long with eight spans, including bridge approach roadways) was constructed at the same location and opened to traffic in November 2011.

The project traverses French and Indian War historic sites in both states, is within the Adirondack Park and crosses pristine Lake Champlain, all areas of high environmental and cultural sensitivity. Temporary ferry slips and landings were built in less than three months, and the ferry was used during bridge construction to eliminate a nearly 100 mile detour for traffic needing to use the bridge. The work was done without collateral intrusion into the environment, while protecting and preserving the historic sites.

“We applaud NYSDOT for its commitment to rebuilding and maintaining our transportation system in a sustainable manner, recognizing the need to reduce transportation’s carbon footprint and preserve our natural surroundings,” said Peter Melewski, vice president and Albany office leader for HNTB. “Our firm is proud to have been a part of this important project and honored to have contributed to the staff’s effort to deliver on the state’s high standards of sustainability.”

GreenLITES is a nationally-recognized program which demonstrates that building and maintaining a transportation system can and should be done while minimizing impacts to the environment. GreenLITES utilizes a rating system to score NYSDOT transportation project designs and operations and to certify them in four increasingly rigorous tiers: “certified,” “silver,” “gold” and “evergreen,” the highest rating. The more sustainable elements incorporated into a project or activity, the higher it scores.

The bridge was designed by HNTB national chief bridge engineer Theodore P. Zoli and built by Flatiron Construction. Zoli, who was recently named Engineering News-Record’s Award of Excellence winner for 2012, is the first structural engineer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship, sometimes called a “genius grant.”

About Flatiron

Flatiron, with a construction volume of more than $ 1 billion in 2011, is one of the leading providers of transportation construction and civil engineering in North America.

Novato, CA (PRWEB) April 25, 2012

Today, Patra Corporation, the world leader in agency managed services and back-office business processing, announced the addition of Gordon Gould to its Board of Directors. Mr. Gould currently serves Towers Watson as Managing Director, Strategy and Corporate Development.

“Gordon brings significant insight, experience and energy to the board and will help Patra move forward in our growth into a mature company,” said Dan Easterlin, Patra Co-Founder and Co-CEO. “His unique industry perspective will strengthen the company and position us for the future. With Gordon’s extensive acquisition experience in benefits, risk and financial services, the time couldn’t be better to add him to our Board.” As Patra continues to pursue growth through internal and external investments, Gould’s experience in corporate strategy, mergers and innovation will be an asset in identifying and optimizing market opportunities.

Over the last seven years, Patra has transitioned from a boutique insurance outsourcing vendor focused on cost-saving labor alternatives to providing complete back-office managed services to many upper- and mid-market agencies, including more than twenty-five percent of the Business Insurance Top 50. In addition to traditional business process outsourcing, Patra’s client offerings include workforce re-design, process streamlining, systems migration, technology implementation, and onshore staffing. Patra’s Novato, CA headquarters also houses the U.S.-staffed customer support organization and full-service printing and mailing facility. Overseas processing is located in India with two centers in Visakhapatnam and a third facility in Bangalore.

“Patra is generating buzz around the insurance world,” said Gordon Gould, Patra’s newest board member. “Patra is a bright star in the industry, a forward-looking company poised to transform the way agencies think of selling and servicing. I’m looking forward to helping the management team grow the company and further expand its footprint in the industry.”

In addition to this appointment, Patra announces that Robin Newman is stepping down from the board to pursue other opportunities, effective February 24, 2012. Robin was integral to Patra’s growth during her six years of service on the Board.

About Patra Corporation

Founded in 2006, Patra Corporation is the worldwide leader in agency managed services and back-office processing. Serving more than 25% of the Business Insurance Top 50 Agencies, Patra is endorsed by both Assurex Global and the CIAB. Patra offers a wide range of services designed to lower costs, reduce risk and improve productivity through the transfer of account management operations to centers in the U.S. and India.
