Description:
This study addresses the conceptual challenges that emerge when calculating Ecological Footprint time series. Building on core concerns arising from the various existing Footprint time series at the national and global scale, this paper discusses conceptual and methodological implications, and suggests improvements for enhancing the clarity, validity and reliability of Ecological Footprint results. Unlike static accounts, time series show trends that allow researchers to test the noise in the data. Also, time series offer the opportunity to examine results and question interpretations, a fertile ground for comparing methodological alternatives. This paper addresses two conceptual issues that determine method design: the specific meaning and measurement challenges of ecological overshoot; and the range of research questions that can be addressed with productivity-adjusted hectares versus actual hectares. The conclusions from this discussion build the groundwork for showcasing time series for three countries.

Chautauqua in June Learning Festival Showcases Western New York?s Historic and Natural Gems

Chautauqua in June Learning Festival Showcases Western New York’s Historic and Natural Gems

Learn to Row with the Chautauqua Lake Rowing Association during Chautauqua in June

Chautauqua, NY (PRWEB) May 16, 2012

Experts in birding, rowing, geology, architecture, and more will join Chautauqua County’s museums and tourist attractions in showcasing the county’s historic gems and natural resources while offering myriad adventures during the Chautauqua in June learning festival, May 25 – June 17, 2012.

Birders will find fun and laughs as well as serious field trips at the 4th Annual Roger Tory Peterson Birding Festival. A highlight of the two-day event, June 8-9, is the chance to meet Greg Miller, the real-life character played by Jack Black in the movie “The Big Year”. Greg’s attempt to set a new record for the most bird sightings in North America within a single year was the inspiration for the book, “The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession” by Mark Obmascik and a 2011 movie directed by David Frankel of “The Devil Wears Prada” fame. Referring to the movie, Roger Tory Peterson Institute’s director of education, Mark Baldwin said, “Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson give fine performances as birders whose passion for the sport takes them to heights that most of us would consider ridiculous. Still, their obsession is not unlike others we might think of as ‘normal,’ and the movie shows that much of what makes us human is what bonds us to other people and to other living things that we find mysterious and beautiful.” Greg Miller will deliver a keynote address at the festival’s closing banquet on Saturday evening. Copies of Obmascik’s book will be available onsite at the nature store.

Field trips include travels to the Mount Zion/Piney Tract Bird Area in Clarion County, PA for grassland and nesting birds as well as to Pennsylvania’s Allegheny National Forest and New York’s Allegany State Park to see all kinds of warblers. Professional ornithologists, birders and photographers including Gary Edwards, Scott Stoleson, and Tim Baird will serve as guides. Additional happenings at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute include a Friday evening reception featuring McGill University ornithologist and regular Bird Watcher’s Digest contributor David Bird, who will present a program titled, “How Birds Do It: The Nefarious Sex Lives of Birds.” Saturday is a family fun day with a host of hands-on demonstrations and workshops, and outdoor activities for kids and families.

At the Jamestown Audubon Center and Sanctuary, educator Jennifer Schlick will take participants on a bluebird tour on May 26th and show them how to build and install their own bluebird next box. The Jamestown Audubon will also be hosting its annual Allegany Nature Pilgrimage, a three day nature extravaganza at Allegany State Park, and “Figure 8 the Lake”, a road trip exploring the social and scientific history of Chautauqua Lake led by naturalist and geologist, Tom Erlandson.

Once a world renowned furniture capital, the City of Jamestown boasts a wealth of industrial and architectural history. Learn about early industrialists and citizens during walking tours with the Fenton History Center and Museum, keeper of Jamestown’s history and a source for genealogy research. Historians, architects, and an amateur archeologist will guide the two hour walks through five different industrial, trade, and residential areas of the city. The Fenton will offer historic walking tours regularly on Saturdays starting Memorial Day Weekend and continuing through September.

Gently rolling hills, rich farmland, and large rural areas make western New York an ideal home for the Amish. Visit New York’s largest old order Amish community with tours of greenhouses or shops and then stop for an afternoon of tea or dinner at the Cherry Creek Inn. Jamestown Community College’s Center for Continuing Education and SUNY Fredonia’s Center for Lifelong Learning are both offering touring and learning experiences in Amish country.

Chautauqua’s lakes and waterways were not only significant as a route to the Ohio River Valley, but a hotspot for the leisurely pursuits of sailing and rowing, a long standing tradition on Chautauqua Lake. Local legends abound about early and renowned rowing competitions from Mayville to Chautauqua Institution. The Chautauqua Lake Rowing Association has recently revived the sport and offers adult learn to row classes in June. For a more recent take on the sport of man-powered boating, Evergreen Outfitters offers introductory classes in paddling, either standing up or sitting down.

Those who grew up near Chautauqua Lake, western New York’s largest inland lake, are sure to remember LS Aero Marine in Bemus Point, a popular and welcome stopping spot to fill up the boat with gas. The marine building has recently been transformed into the new Lawson Boating Heritage Center. David Lawson, former owner of L.S. Aero Marine and a trustee of the center will present a guided tour of the new museum and boat restoration shop on June 14th.

Chautauqua in June is a three week learning festival, May 25 – June 17, 2012, with classes and workshops held in both indoor and outdoor classrooms across Chautauqua County, NY. The region is historically known as a destination for leisure learning, summer camps and workshops. Additional courses offered include Bicycle Repair and Maintenance, Bridge for Beginners, Bach & Beyond: Pre-concert Conversations, and How to think Like a Genealogist. There are more than 60 workshops in all offered during the three-week schedule with costs ranging from $ 10 for a two hour workshop to $ 250 for two days of workshops and meals. Participants can register for workshops online or request a program guide at http://www.tourchautauqua.com or by calling the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau at 1-866-908-4569.

Behavioural Ecology of Teleost Fishes

Behavioural Ecology of Teleost Fishes

Teleost (bony) fishes are found in all types of aquatic environment and are extremely diverse behaviorally. Their evolutionary success is partly due to their striking behavioral plasticity; as such they are also extremely useful organisms for the study of mechanistic and functional models of behavior. Considerable progress has been made over the past decade in understanding how behavior, ecology, and genetics interact to determine individual survival and reproductive success in fishes, and thus the evolution of their behavior. Behavioural Ecology of Teleost Fishes reviews the latest advances in behavioral adaptations for survival and reproduction in fishes, and proposes new directions and approaches for future research. The book focuses on habitat selection and space use, foraging, predator avoidance and evasion, and reproduction. It also considers how the behaviour of individuals affects ecological processes at population and community levels.

The book benefits students, teachers, and researchers interested in the behavior and ecology of fishes, as well as those with a general interest in behavioral ecology. It is also a valuable reference source for biologists, aquaculturists, and conservationists.

WWF Partners in New 5-Year Program to Help Restore Nepal’s Forests and Combat Climate Impacts

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) November 10, 2011

A five-year program to reduce the impacts of a changing climate and threats to biodiversity and local people in Nepal, called Hariyo Ban, was launched this week in Kathmandu. The program, funded by USAID, is being led by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in partnership with a consortium of leading conservation organizations in Nepal – CARE, the Federation of Community Forestry Users in Nepal (FECOFUN) and the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC).

Climate change poses a major threat to the people and biodiversity of Nepal. More than 10 million people are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change in Nepal. Glacier retreat in the Himalayas has increased the risk of glacier lake outburst floods, which could have devastating consequences for downstream communities, infrastructure, property and wild animals. Increasingly intense and frequent forest fires, floods and landslides also threaten biodiversity and livelihoods in the region.

Hariyo Ban, which means “green forests” in Nepali, will help build resilience to climate change in communities and ecosystems by restoring and protecting Nepal’s forests. It will also improve the livelihoods of some of Nepal’s most impoverished communities.

“Recognizing the inseparable link between climate change and development, USAID is proud to lead President Obama’s vision for global development that includes the Global Climate Change Initiative,” said Ms. Patricia Mahoney, Chargé d’affaires, US Embassy. “This initiative promotes strategic efforts to build lasting resilience against climate impacts, reduce deforestation and land degradation, foster low-carbon growth, and promote sustainable societies, thus, meeting the adaptation and mitigation needs of developing countries like Nepal.”

Hariyo Ban aims to reduce over 1 million metric tons of CO2 emissions in the target landscapes. It will also help improve the livelihoods of 180,000 people; improve the management of 124,000 acres of forest; and generate revenue from Payments for Environmental Services.

“This ambitious project recognizes that forests are the true wealth of Nepal, as forests not only support the livelihoods of millions of people and provide a safe haven for endangered species but also are vital to combat the impacts of climate change,” said Judy Oglethorpe, the Chief of Party for Hariyo Ban. “For WWF, this project also marks a return to the world famous Annapurna Conservation Area, which was created through the pioneering efforts of the late Mingma Sherpa and Dr. Chandra Gurung, both of WWF.”

Hariyo Ban will build on the successes of past conservation initiatives in the Terai Arc Landscape in southern Nepal, which is the biggest and most ambitious landscape level conservation site in Nepal, and the new Chitwan-Annapurna Linkage, which links the high Himalayas to the Terai.

“Nepal is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world and the Government of Nepal welcomes the efforts being made by Hariyo Ban,” said Mr. Deependra Bahadur Kshetry, Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission. “The year 2011 is being celebrated as the International Year of Forests and the theme ‘Forests for People’ also complements the goals of Hariyo Ban, which is expected to bring positive results to the people and environment of Nepal.”

Climate change in Nepal

The increasingly unpredictable weather patterns include warmer and drier winters, drought, changes in the monsoon rain patterns, and more intense precipitation events. In the mountains the warmer, drier winters with limited snowfall and rain in the last few years have affected winter crops and contributed to food shortages. In the low-lying Terai more intense flash floods and cold spells are destroying crops, and severe flooding has resulted in temporary displacement of people.

The changes in temperature and rainfall are creating favorable environments for pests, diseases and invasive species to emerge, spread and encroach in agricultural and forest lands and cause loss of biodiversity. Water resources are affected, with direct impacts on wetlands, the availability and quality of fresh water, water recharge systems for irrigation and hydropower, as well as the risk of increased floods, droughts and landslides. The most sensitive sectors are agriculture, forestry, water and energy, health, urban and infrastructure, tourism, industry, and overall livelihoods and economy.

Sustainable Development: Principles, Frameworks, and Case Studies (Social Environmental Sustainability)

Sustainable Development: Principles, Frameworks, and Case Studies (Social Environmental Sustainability)

Coined in the 1970s, the term sustainable development and the ideas behind it have enjoyed varying amounts of popularity over the years. And while dire predictions abound, the full impacts of global warming are not known, nor can they be known. What we do know is that to be sustainable, all societies must adjust to new realities, which include changing ecosystems and natural limits to growth. How do we address these issues and maintain an equitable way of life for all on the planet?

Exploring the human-related aspects of sustainable development, Sustainable Development: Principles, Frameworks, and Case Studies emphasizes the need to move away from an unwanted circumstance by being systemic in our thinking instead of symptomatic. The authors argue that we cannot move away from an unwanted, negative circumstance, unless we can move toward a desired, positive outcome. The text summarizes positive approaches and presents strong theoretical and historical concepts along with salient case examples that illustrate the desired outcome of each model or framework discussed.

Often ensnared in thorny political ideology, the sustainable development issue also suffers from a deep and multidimensional nature that can be intimidating. This book offers, in one volume, a broad discussion of important frameworks pertaining to sustainable development. Based on the expertise of distinguished practitioners and scholars, the book’s content includes diverse and interrelated subjects drawn from a wide range of geographical areas. It offers techniques for evaluating and applying the basic principles of sustainable development and participatory project planning to achieve economic and environmental goals.
